Since 2001, California has responded to the dilemma of baby abandonment by providing a life-saving alternative for distressed parents who are unwilling or unable to care for a newborn child.
Users can generate reports with statewide counts as well as counts by county, city, or ZIP Code. Selected demographic variables, such as race/ethnicity and education level, and health indicators, such as birthweight and cause of death, are also available.
Go to a Safe Surrender site (at any Los Angeles County hospital or fire station) and give the baby to an employee within 72 hours of the baby’s birth. Fill out a voluntary and anonymous medical history form (or take one home and mail it back later) to help provide medical care for the baby.

From January 1, 2001, to December 31, 2017, 931 newborns have been surrendered in California, and 88 newborns were surrendered during the 2017 calendar year. This is compared with 175 infants abandoned since 2001, one of which occurred in the 2017 calendar year.
As of September 2013, 109 infants have been safely surrendered in Los Angeles County. While Baby Safe Surrender has seen a reduction in infant abandonment, there is still more work to be done. Since 2001, 71 infants have been found abandoned in Los Angeles County; 13 of these infants survived and 58 were found deceased.
