The indirect system prevents furring of the boiler, primary flow and return pipes, and hot water storage cylinder. The system is also employed in soft water districts when heating is combined with hot water supply, to prevent rusting of the cast iron radiators, which causes discolouration of the water to be drawn off.

5.2.2 Indirect Water Heating Systems. A schematic diagram of indirect water heating systems is shown in Figure 5.11. In this system, a heat transfer fluid is circulated through the closed collector loop to a heat exchanger, where its heat is transferred to the potable water.
