Four bridges have been built over the Indian River Inlet connecting the communities of Rehoboth Beach (north) and Bethany Beach (south), Delaware. The first was a timber bridge built in 1934, which was replaced by a concrete and steel “moveable swing” bridge in 1938.
In November of 1929, dynamite was used to open up the inlet which was later dredged to keep it open to navigation. In 1934, a simple wooden bridge over the inlet completed the construction of Ocean Highway, which is now State Route 1. By the late 1930s, jetties were constructed to stabilize the inlet.
An initial design for the new bridge was unveiled in 2003, following considerable public input. It promised to be dramatic: a 1,000-foot span supported by a single, bowlike concrete arch from which stainless-steel cables descended in a single plane of radial stays.
