8 kwi 2019 · The iMac works fine as a display, but when I try to turn target display mode off (command-F2, or unplugging the cable), the iMac screen goes black or fuzzy, and I can't use the iMac unless I restart it.

8 lis 2020 · I'm having a problem with a 5k iMac 27" (mid-2015). When I turn it on, the backlight comes on, but the screen is completely black and there’s no activity. An external monitor (plugged in with a Mini Displayport / Thunderbolt to HDMI cable) works, but only after I log in.
5 kwi 2019 · If you try to enter target display mode while logged into a user account on the iMac, you get a black screen with no other indication that anything else is wrong. The connected Macs think the iMac is a display, but the iMac screen is black.
Change the iMac's brightness *before* activating TDM. I've had this problem intermittently for quite a while now, but reducing my iMac's screen brightness to zero prior to TDM fixed the issue today (had to try twice).
