The C-141 Starlifter was the US Air Force’s first major jet aircraft designed to meet military standards as a troop and cargo carrier.
27 wrz 2006 · Il-76 has a few advantages in e.g. fuselage diameter size but fairly comparable to the C-141 really. The AMST program's YC-15 led to the C-17 which replaced the C-141. This has a wider fuselage. I'm not understanding the premise really? What is unique about the Il-76 that was missed by the West?

This relatively unsung hero of logistics is still flying around for a number of operators – many of them in North Africa, Russia, and the former Soviet republics.
The Ilyushin Il-76 has been the most important transport aircraft in the Russian Air Force inventory since the 1970s. Production has restarted after a two-decade hiatus on an updated version of a type that has also served as a tanker, early warning platform and civilian freighter, among other duties.
