The Firearms Services Bureau, through its Firearm Owner’s Identification Card Program (FOID), determines the eligibility of applicants who wish to acquire, possess, or transfer firearms. The Bureau also administers the state’s Concealed Carry Licensing (CCL) program.

The Illinois State Police will issue your card pending verification that all information is accurate and you are eligible under the FOID Act. FOID renewals are processed within 60 business days. New FOID applications are processed within 30 calendar days.
Illinois law requires that, when a firearm is sold by a Federal Firearms License (FFL) holder, or in any private sale, the seller perform a dial-up inquiry to the State Police to verify that the buyer's FOID card is valid. This additional check is known as the Firearm Transfer Inquiry Program (FTIP).
