The USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map is the standard by which gardeners and growers can determine which perennial plants are most likely to thrive at a location. The map is based on the average annual extreme minimum winter temperature, displayed as 10-degree F zones and 5-degree F half zones.

According to the 2023 USDA Hardiness Zone Map Ohio, Illinois is in Zones 5b (-15°F to -10°F). There is no change from the 2012 USDA Hardiness Zone Map which has Ohio in also in Zones 5b (-15°F to -10°F).
The latest plant hardiness zone map shows Illinois spanning zones 5a to 7b. The most northern zone (5a) is isolated to the very northwest corner of the state, while much of the rest of northern Illinois is in zone 5b.
