Who came up with U.S. state abbreviations? We can largely thank the U.S. Postal Service (USPS), which has created abbreviations during much of its history. In 1831 the USPS developed its first list of state abbreviations, each consisting of two letters except Ohio’s, which was simply “O.”

The United States Postal Service publishes this list of official 2-letter abbreviations for the 50 US states. The abbreviations are to be used when addressing mail. The two letters of each abbreviation are always capitalized and without periods.
The traditional abbreviations for U.S. states and territories, widely used in mailing addresses before the start of two-letter U.S. postal abbreviations, are still regularly used for other purposes (such as legal citation), and are still recognized (though discouraged) by the Postal Service.
