When evaluating a vehicle's side impact crashworthiness, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) examines and rates three components: driver and passenger injury measures, head protection, and structural performance. This protocol describes our ratings criteria for each of these components.
On the NHTSA website you'll be shown each test in detail, a description of how your car performed, and what crash test rating it received. You'll enter the same information on the IIHS website, but unlike the NHTSA site some vehicle models may be missing.
5 gru 2021 · In order to be named a Top Safety Pick or a Top Safety Pick+, a vehicle must score Good ratings in all crash test scenarios. The Moderate Overlap Frontal Test is the primary IIHS crash test scenario. Unlike the NHTSA, the IIHS test involves the car hitting the edge of a stationary barricade head-on at 40 mph.
