When evaluating a vehicle's side impact crashworthiness, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) examines and rates three components: driver and passenger injury measures, head protection, and structural performance. Car safety ratings are the aggregate safety score given by two U.S. organizations: the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). Each group has its own set of evaluation criteria, but they all strive to inform customers about a car's safety performance.
