The purpose of this calculator is to facilitate the overall evaluation of side impact crashes according to the Institute's published protocols and guidelines. Criteria are based on the Institute's latest practices and are subject to change. Making roads and vehicles safer for everyone.
Vehicle ratings. IIHS tests evaluate two aspects of safety: crashworthiness — how well a vehicle protects its occupants in a crash — and crash avoidance and mitigation — technology that can prevent a crash or lessen its severity. Start typing a make and/or model, and a list of choices will appear.
Dummy seating procedure for rear outboard positions Version II (November 2023) Left rear passenger template used in conjunction with the moderate overlap 2.0 crash test protocol and dummy seating procedure for rear outboard positions.
When evaluating a vehicle's side impact crashworthiness, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) examines and rates three components: driver and passenger injury measures, head protection, and structural performance. This protocol describes our ratings criteria for each of these components.
Ratings. NHTSA's New Car Assessment Program rates vehicles to determine crashworthiness and rollover safety. The safety ratings are gathered during controlled crash and rollover tests conducted at NHTSA research facilities.
To qualify for 2024 Top Safety Pick, a vehicle must earn good ratings in the small overlap front, original moderate overlap front and updated side tests. Acceptable or good headlights must come standard across all trim levels, and the vehicle must earn an acceptable or good rating in the pedestrian front crash prevention test.
24 lut 2021 · The results of this project suggest that the NHTSA crash-safety rating is more credible than the IIHS rating, particularly for vehicles rated 3-Star, 4-Star or 5-Star. This is true for both predicting injuries and severe injury or death.
