Ratings. NHTSA's New Car Assessment Program rates vehicles to determine crashworthiness and rollover safety. The safety ratings are gathered during controlled crash and rollover tests conducted at NHTSA research facilities.
The NHTSA puts vehicles through four separate tests before giving their rating, while the IIHS administers six tests. For the IIHS Top Safety Pick, vehicles must score near-top ratings in five of these tests, obtaining at least an "acceptable" ranking in their headlights category.

24 lut 2021 · The results of this project suggest that the NHTSA crash-safety rating is more credible than the IIHS rating, particularly for vehicles rated 3-Star, 4-Star or 5-Star. This is true for both predicting injuries and severe injury or death.
