Herpes simplex virus (HSV) types 1 and 2 cause genital herpes infections and are the most common cause of genital ulcer disease in industrialized nations. Although these infections are very common, the majority of them remain underdiagnosed because they are asymptomatic or unrecognized.

This test is used to detect IgG antibodies specific to HSV types 1 and/or 2 infection and confirm or rule out possible infection with herpes simplex types 1 and/or 2 virus in prenatal patients in whom HSV 2 infection can cause serious prenatal disease.
HSV-2 Type Specific IgG assay is indicated for testing sexually active adults or expectant mothers to aid in determining evidence of prior infection with HSV-2 virus. It should not be used to diagnose an episode of suspected genital herpes infection.
23 maj 2023 · Screening for HSV infection is done via serologic testing, which detects the presence of HSV-1 or HSV-2 antibodies in the blood. Molecular studies, including PCR, can be used to detect virus on mucocutaneous surfaces or in lesions during asymptomatic and symptomatic shedding, respectively.
