View the new 2023 Wisconsin Hardiness Zone Map. Based on the 1990 USDA Hardiness Zone Map, this interactive version covers the state of Wisconsin which ranges from USDA Zone 3a to USDA Zone 5b.
Wisconsin Plant Hardiness Zones. Hardiness Zones, also referred to as Growing Zones or Planting zones are defined by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Agricultural Research Service (ARS). The zones in this map were created in 2023 using mean extreme climate data covering the period of 1991 to 2020.
USDA has classified the entire United States into 13 plant hardiness zones based on their average, annual minimum temperature during 30 year period. Zones with lower number indicate colder climate and the higher number indicate a warmer climate.
Using the climate zone map to the right, match the jurisdiction to the appropriate IECC climate zone. Use the simplified table of IECC building envelope requirements (below) to determine the basic prescriptive requirements for the thermal envelope associated with the jurisdiction.
This chapter establishes climate zone by US counties and territories and includes methodology for determining climate zones elsewhere. It also contains product rating, marking and installation requirements for materials such as insulation, windows, doors and siding.
