5 lut 2018 · Icebergs are floating pieces that have broken off from larger ice shelves. They can be big enough to sink the Titanic or land a helicopter on, or small enough to fit into a glass. They can also come in many colors, depending on the compression of ice crystals and the presence of dirt, rock, and algae.
Ice floes, however, do not only melt on the upper surface. The solar radiation absorbed there is also transferred through the ice. As a result, the floe becomes warmer overall and also begins to melt in the centre. The small brine channels become larger and the ice becomes more porous and brittle.
Floes are subdivided according to horizontal extent as follows: Small: 20-100 m across. Medium: 100-500 m across. Big: 500-2,000 m across. Vast: 2-10 km across. Giant: Greater than 10 km across. Fast Ice: Ice which forms and remains fast along the coast.
