A defining feature of the Quaternary is the build-up and decay of continental-scale ice sheets in the high middle latitudes of the northern hemisphere and in Europe. The current interglacial period began at the start of the Holocene 11,700 years ago.
This article summarizes the geological and paleoceanographic evidence of the Quaternary ice sheets, with emphasis on the chronology of glacial-interglacial cycles and the geographic distribution of the ice sheets.
