Hypertension – Blood pressure of 140mmHg systolic or higher, or 90mmHg diastolic or higher. Severe hypertension – Blood pressure ≥160/110 mmHg. Chronic hypertension – Hypertension that is present before 20 weeks, or if the woman is already taking antihypertensive medication when referred to maternity services.

Hypertensive disorders during pregnancy carry risks for the woman and remain a cause of maternal death. The mortality rate from hypertensive related causes has remained stable at 6 per 100,000 maternities in 2014-16 and 2017-19 (MBRRACE-UK, 2021).
