21 mar 2021 · The aneurysmal, and often mobile, inter-atrial septum is frequently associated with other clinically relevant structural cardiac abnormalities, particularly patent foramen ovale (PFO).
1 cze 2022 · The interatrial septum may be associated with thromboembolic events in many mechanisms. Essential strategies to prevent the recurrence of this event are to understand the multidirectional role of the interatrial septum as a source of thromboembolism and the cause of ischemic stroke.
22 cze 2023 · An atrial septal aneurysm (ASA) occurs when a bulge forms in the atrial septum, the membrane separating the heart's upper left and upper right chambers (atria). The atrial septum usually is relatively immobile, but it can sometimes enlarge, become hypermobile, and protrude into the left or right atrium.

3 lut 2012 · Atrial septal aneurysm is a rare cardiac abnormality that is usually detected during routine echocardiography or evaluation of ischemic stroke. It may be isolated or in the presence of other defects, most often patent foramen ovale.
Several studies have shown that PFO anatomical features, such as PFO with large interatrial shunt (“large PFO”) or PFO associated with atrial septal aneurysm (ASA)—so-called “high-risk PFOs”—could identify such patients.
A study of 36 patients with atrial septal aneurysm (ASA), a rare cardiac abnormality, found that 28% had cerebrovascular or peripheral embolic events. Echocardiography showed interatrial shunting in most patients, suggesting paradoxical embolization as a possible mechanism.
