This page describes how to enable support for the Huawei E220 on Debian systems. The Huawei E220 (also called vodem) is an external 3.6Mbps HSDPA USB modem. E220 is supported natively in Linux kernels 2.6.20 and later, using the usbserial.ko (usbserial-generic interface) module.

The 12d1:1f01 indicates that the modem is in storage mode and we need to switch it to serial mode. type sudo nano /etc/usb_modeswitch.d/12d1:1f01
16 maj 2011 · To switch to the generic-smp kernel, you need to create an initrd, edit /etc/lilo.conf, and run `lilo` as root. To create an initrd, follow the instructions in /boot/README.initrd. You could also use Alien Bob's script , which tries to guess the correct mkinitrd command for your system.
I first started using my Huawei E220 HSDPA modem in Ubuntu 7.10 (Gutsy Gibbon). While there were some problems with it at first, it was somehow fixed later on, and I've been using it without issues until I upgraded to Ubuntu 9.10.
IMPORTANT!! You should NOT edit any of the completed lines in wvdial.conf, the settings that the above command wrote to that file are unique to your modem/service provider, so copying anyone elses from a thread will only prevent yours from functioning. However you will need to edit 3 lines of text: Phone, Username and Password.

A number of sources suggests that the E220 modem works straight with Linux via Network Manager, but it certainly didn’t work for me straight off. So I had do some reading on the wireless broadband forums to try to find answers.
