Best thing is to see that you pump vigor when you can, 40 should be your goal as you go forward. This is the sweet spot for HP/stats, with diminishing rewards up to 60 vigor. More HP greatly increases your survival chances, with damage increases coming primarily from weapon upgrades (at least early/mid game).
