11 kwi 2015 · History of West Memphis. Benjamin Fooy (or Foy), one of the earliest recorded white settlers in the area near present-day West Memphis, was a native of Holland sent by the Spanish governor of Louisiana to establish a settlement on the Mississippi River.
By 1938 West Memphis was home to four lumber companies, four cotton seed oil companies, three cotton gins, a cotton compress (one of the state’s largest), a feed mill, a distillery, and an ice plant.
