HPV-related diseases are of major concern for both men and women. Coinfection of HIV and HPV is common and is associated with an increased risk of HPV-related cancers. HPV is the main cause of several cancers, including cervical and anal dysplasias.
While HPV infection can cause cervical cancer in women, it is also a strong risk factor for HIV acquisition. This may have a biological basis; HPV infection induces genital inflammation, vaginal barrier disruption, and influx of activated target T cells, which have all been implicated in HIV risk.
HPV infection has been found to significantly increase the risk of HIV transmission for both men and women. Thanks to HIV treatment, many more women living with HIV are living long and healthy lives, but it is imperative that women living with HIV do not succumb to other illnesses, including cervical cancer.
