I ruined one tip immediately from oxidation then learned how to retin the tip with a tip tinner (also learned how to keep the tip clean).
I would recommend just using solder because it's cheap and easy. I have heard that tip tinner is very reactive and using it frequently can damage your tip. You also don't need to add a lot of solder, just enough to get a good coating on the surface of the iron.
