Meaning Warden, Gladiator, or Sledger would be a good addition to add early game and in later game. If you don't have Accel then you should have Minigunner to give heavy damage. You should also have Crook Boss or Cowboy to add early game and give some buffs to you later on.

However, engineers are not good at holding lead balloons. The Engineer's own DPS is very low, the range is shorter than the Ranger's, and it is vulnerable to stun.
Engineer is a really good damage dealer mid - late game tower (it is not very good in early game). The max dps is around 460 (accelerator has less then 300 dps and is cheaper with 10k, that means the dps to price ratio is better for engineer).
