East and west facing windows should be protected to reduce heat gains into the building in the morning and afternoon. A combination of external vertical and horizontal louvers or overhangs can block excessive solar gain.
With west-facing windows, for example, you can have your shades wide open for maximal view and daylight illumination in the morning, when the sun is on the East side of the building, and close them in the afternoon when the sun shines strongly on the window during the hottest part of the day.
Window awnings can reduce solar heat gain in the summer by up to 65% on south-facing windows and 77% on west-facing windows. You can use an awning to shade one window or have an awning custom-made to shade the entire side of your house.
