So I replaced them and now the console turns on and works great!... except it can't read disks. I tried buying a replacement laser but that didn't work either. So anyway, I was wondering if anyone had some information on how to install a modern disc drive in the system.

You would need to either a) get the key from your old DVD drive and put it into the firmware on the new DVD drive, or b) keep the daughterboard (PCB/circuit board) from your old DVD drive and put it in the new drive.
It is quick and easy to replace the drive, and it is legal as you own it and the drive and you do not intend to play backup games of any sort on the console. The easiest way to do so is to take out the broken drive and use a 360 Connectivity Kit V3 to connect it to the pc.
