If you just wanted to hide or organise your desktop shortcuts you could use a program like Fences and double clicking on the desktop would hide all shortcuts, double click again un-hides them. Right click on the desktop>first option>dont show desktop icons.

Some of them I can just drag to the trash no problem, but some of them when I drag them to the trash seem to ask me whether I want to delete the whole programme, rather than just the shortcut.
