  6. I've had quite good results removing scratch "haze" with polywatch, but any polish method that would remove all scratches would likely eat through the clear layer. If it were as easy as using sandpaper and a polish wheel, I'd imagine you'd see refurbishment and treated parts on ebay everywhere.

You'll also need a lot time and cotton balls or soft rags. Don't use anything with paper in it. That will scratch the metal. When you're done the iPod will shine like a mirror.
