To measure the average length of your normal pace (the pace factor, or PF): take 100 normal steps on horizontal ground, starting with the toes of your back foot from a well-marked point, A, and walking along a straight line.

The length of pace of an individual should be checked with an accurately measured distance in order to determine the so-called Pace Factor. Pace Factor (P.F.) is defined as the ratio of the measured distance in the number of paces made by an individual to cover the measured distance or:
This document provides instructions for determining one's pace factor, or the average distance covered with each pace, through surveying techniques. It involves measuring level and sloping courses of known distances and counting the number of paces it takes to walk the courses over five trials.
Students will first determine their individual pace factor by walking a measured distance and counting steps over multiple trials. Then, using their pace factor, students can estimate the length of an unknown distance by pacing it and calculating.
A person’s pace factor is determined by pacing (walking) a measured distance, usually 300 to 500 ft, several times and determining the average length of pace (step).
