This calculation is based on the alcohol content and the fact that pure alcohol contains about 7 calories per gram. But as you might imagine, there’s more to the story than just the numbers.
While 1 liter of plain water weighs 1000 grams, the weight of alcohol differs from that of water. One liter of ethanol is 33% lighter than water, and only weighs 789 grams. That is why the weight of 1 liter of vodka with 40% spirit (80 proof) is 950 grams not 1000 grams.
