Surgery has a major role in the treatment of thyroid tumors in dogs. Whether surgery is curative depends on the histological tumor type and the disease stage. Radio-iodine treatment, external beam radiation, or chemotherapy are treatment options for cases with unresectable or metastasized disease.

If the fT4 is low, a diagnosis of hypothyroidism can be made. If T4 is low and fT4 is within reference range, hypothyroidism cannot be diagnosed, and the clinician should consider other differentials for the dog’s clinical signs. T3 concentrations vary widely and are not diagnostically useful.

Radiation therapy can be used to down-stage invasive thyroid tumors prior to surgical resection. PR 30%-50% in dogs treated with either doxorubicin or cisplatin. Cisplatin: 9% (1/11) CR and 54% (6/11) PR with overall MST 98 days, but MST for responders 322 days.
