18 gru 2012 · Short answer: use a screws which are just a little big longer and thicker. I just had this problem. I bought a hinge with a different hole pattern and drilled new holes. Remove the screws from the door and door jamb and chisel out the wood where you would like to drill pilot holes.
For hinges, remove and replace only two screws at a time so your door remains stable during the procedure. I recently swapped out 1" screws for 3 1/4" screws for all my exterior doors, and the contrast in length between the stubby builder screws and real 3" screws is astonishing. See pic.
