Given my too-close familiarity with my first VN-in-progress, and the variable nature of reading speed, I have no idea how to honestly estimate the length of my visual novel when someone asks how long it is. Is there a good rule of thumb to use, like "an hour per 1000 lines of dialogue" or something of that nature?
I just made a guide that explains all the -ge visual novel terms. I am aware there are many other guides for that out there, and many of them were discussed before, but I tried to make mine more detailed and easier to understand.

For single monitor users, the highest used resolutions is 1920 x 1080 (which is HD) with nearly 50% of the population. The next closest is 1366x768 at 22%, which is a very common laptop/netbook screen size. The rest are all in the low percents.
In the case of separate files, you'll need to be drawing at a higher resolution, ideally 2x (so: 3000px tall (FHD), 2000px tall (HD)), and then export the normal sprites at half resolution and the closeups at full resolution.
The sprites that ship with VN Maker are 395x1178 - but the engine can take whatever you give it, really. As a for instance, a character I made recently I drew at 3840x2048 resolution with 600 dots per inch - if I were to put it in the game it'd probably be 960x512 @ 200 dpi.
A visual novel (VN) is a form of digital interactive fiction. Visual novels are often associated with the medium of video games, but are not always labeled as such themselves. [1] They combine a textual narrative with static or animated illustrations and a varying degree of interactivity.
