Personally I draw at 4* the size of the intended resolution of the game. In my case the native resolution of the game is 1920x1080, so 7680*4320 is the size of the drawing. I make the canvas slightly larger than that to act as a border in case I want to pan or zoom the image at points in the game.
The sprites that ship with VN Maker are 395x1178 - but the engine can take whatever you give it, really. As a for instance, a character I made recently I drew at 3840x2048 resolution with 600 dots per inch - if I were to put it in the game it'd probably be 960x512 @ 200 dpi.
Text boxes in visual novels typically have backgrounds that cover the full screen, so 480x270. The text box is overlaid over the roughly bottom quarter of the screen, so it might be 60-70 pixels tall.
For single monitor users, the highest used resolutions is 1920 x 1080 (which is HD) with nearly 50% of the population. The next closest is 1366x768 at 22%, which is a very common laptop/netbook screen size. The rest are all in the low percents.

4 gru 2015 · I assumed the "battlebacks" would be a good reference point for a good horizontal size, but I wanted to ask here first. If anyone knows of any good dowloadable, horizontal MV visual novel backgrounds that'd also be a big help.

" How many pixels do I need to render this detail in the intended style? For characters, the smallest necessary detail will typically be facial features, especially the eyes.
