I'm going to say 30-60 since most of my favorites are in that range, but really it can be anything as long as it's good. Although 60+ hours is questionable for a single VNs length, most things start to drag after 50 hours no matter how good it is.
Given my too-close familiarity with my first VN-in-progress, and the variable nature of reading speed, I have no idea how to honestly estimate the length of my visual novel when someone asks how long it is. Is there a good rule of thumb to use, like "an hour per 1000 lines of dialogue" or something of that nature?

The length labels on VNDB are generalized and mostly based on the size of the game script. F/SN, labeled very long (> 50 hours,) happens to have 12mb of text, which is very big. Tsukihime has 4mb of text, and is labeled long (30-50 hours.)
