The image system is there, but the director hides it enough so that the audience is not really aware of what they’re looking at, unless somebody points it out.

It seems clear that our visual system limits how dissimilar frames can be in a feature film; interpreting a disconnected series of images is difficult for more than a couple seconds at a time. Average RSVP sequences have a VAI of roughly 0.80, but are also dependent upon the images being displayed.

Normal limits. The classical image on the shape and size of the visual field by Harry Moss Traquair in his book Clinical Perimetry (1938; modified to show the essentials).
