Twenty-five area fire departments responded to the incident, some were called and some came on their own. Some of those engine companies went to the surrounding fire houses to respond to emergencies in other areas of the city.

Prior to that, volunteer firefighters, like those pictured here in front of their steam engine wearing their best parade uniforms, served the small but growing city.
