3 sie 2023 · The Civil Court of the City of New York consists of 3 parts: General Civil, Housing, and Small Claims. General Civil cases includes matters where parties are seeking monetary relief up to $50,000. The Housing Part hears landlord-tenant matters and cases involving maintenance of housing standards.
The Housing Court handles almost all the residential landlord-tenant cases in New York City, including eviction cases filed by landlords, repair cases filed by tenants and by the City of New York, illegal lockout cases filed by tenants, and cases complaining of harassment.
Civil Court History. The Civil Court of the City of New York was established on September 1, 1962 as a result of the merger of the City Court and the Municipal Court of the City of New York. This merger was part of a statewide court reorganization in response to Gov. Thomas E. Dewey's Tweed Commission, which issued its recommendations in 1958.
