Built around 1910, the twelve-story hotel was an imposing structure on the corner of St. Peter and Fifth streets. Its light tan façade had become faded and dirty, and the lobby floor and pillars had been tiled and wallpapered over in a 1950s-era modernizing effort that destroyed much of its original charm.
