The Trafalgar class is a refinement of the Swiftsure class and was designed six years later than its predecessor. The design includes a new reactor core and Type 2020 sonar (now replaced by Sonar 2076 on some boats). The internal layout is similar to the Swiftsure, and is only 2.5 metres longer.
HMS Tireless was the third Trafalgar-class nuclear submarine of the Royal Navy. Tireless is the second submarine of the Royal Navy to bear this name. Launched in March 1984, Tireless was sponsored by Sue Squires, wife of Admiral 'Tubby' Squires, and commissioned in October 1985.
For 17 hours, HMS Tireless was on top of the world - and the memories will linger long in the minds of the sailors who experienced it. The hunter-killer submarine became the first British boat to visit the North Pole for eight years after surfacing with American nuclear submarine USS Hampton at the Earth's most northerly point.
23 kwi 2019 · Despite their unsuitability, non-DDS-fitted nuclear boats have been used to launch SF operations. In 1999 HMS Tireless almost suffered a serious accident when exercising this capability in the Mediterranean. The boat was trimmed down with the casing almost awash.
