The HK MP7 is a select-fire personal defense weapon (PDW) with an action that is heavily inspired by HK's G36 rifle. It was designed in the late 1980's for a NATO competition to provide troops with a weapon that is superior to a pistol when the troops in question don't expect to need a rifle.
1 kwi 2014 · For the amount the HK97 costs, you could buy a PS90 carbine and a ton of ammo. Honestly, I believe this gun at this price point is only for the most die hard H&K collectors. While cool, I can think of a whole lot of other guns I would rather have at that price point!

So there may be a sweet spot where the gun is classified as a rifle under German law (and therefore exportable as a regular semi auto civilian rifle) yet deemed a handgun under US law (otherwise the non-sporting import restrictions and 922r compliance would make imports basically impossible).
