25 maj 2004 · Rice was the first commodity to transform a portion of Georgia’s landscape. Landowners cleared large swaths of forest to construct plantations and rice fields. However, tidal rivers inundated and drained the impounded rice, limiting the most intense human agricultural production to the tidal deltas.
The Chattahoochee–Oconee National Forest in northern Georgia comprises two United States National Forests, the Oconee National Forest in eastern Georgia and the Chattahoochee National Forest located in the North Georgia Mountains.
This takes into account the wood product, wildlife, recreational, soil, aesthetic, historical, and cultural resources of the forest. Some of the state forests are also available for public recreational activities.
On November 27, 1959, President Dwight D. Eisenhower proclaimed 96,000 acres of federal lands in middle Georgia as the Oconee National Forest, and the Oconee National Forest joined the Chattahoochee National Forest to become the Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forests.
