Legio IX Hispana ("9th Hispanian Legion"), [1] also written as Legio VIIII Hispana, [2] was a legion of the Imperial Roman army that existed from the 1st century BC until at least AD 120. The legion fought in various provinces of the late Roman Republic and early Roman Empire.
IX Hispana (The "Spanish Legion") — was one of the oldest and most feared units in the Roman army. Raised by Pompey in 65 BC, it fought victorious campaigns across the Empire, from Gaul to Africa, Sicily to Spain and Germania to Britain.

Legio IX Hispana, a notable Roman legion, participated in campaigns with Julius Caesar in Gaul and against Pompey during the Civil Wars. Subsequently, it joined forces with Augustus in the Cantabrian Wars. This legion was also part of the four that Emperor Claudius brought along for the 43 CE conquest of Britain.
