Sports tourism is a niche form of tourism that is gaining popularity and thus expanding opportunities around the world (Parker, 2019). In fact, sports tourism is considered the fastest growing sector of the travel industry according to the United Nations World Tourism Organization.
research specializes in the destination choice of active sport tourists and the segmentation of sport tourists. He has also looked into the passive sport tourism of minor sport events. In addition, he is closely associated with the German sport system as the Vice President of two sport federations.
Sports tourism is one of the fastest growing industries in the world because it involves individuals traveling in order to either observe of participate in sporting events. These individuals end up in a situation where they observe sports from outside their normal environment.
This chapter traces the historical trajectory of sporting tourism and explores several examples ranging from the history of the team “sporting tour” to individual activities such as surfing and skiing, before sketching the possibilities and concerns for historians of sporting tourism.
