The tradition of Bible translations in Christianity in Russia begins with Slavic translations of the Bible and Old Church Slavonic. Tsar Peter the Great felt that the Russian people needed a Bible in the vernacular and authorized Pastor Johann Ernst Glück in 1703 to prepare such an edition.
History. The translation began in 1813, after the establishment of the Russian Bible Society and by permission of Czar Alexander I. The complete New Testament was published in 1820 and the Old Testament was already translated up to the book of Ruth when work on the project was halted in 1825 (?).

The first complete Bible to appear in Russia came relatively late, in the year 1499, at the instigation of Gennadi, Archbishop of Novgorod. Pre viously in Russia there had only been individual books of the Bible, such as the gospels and the psalter, and also liturgical books, homiletic literature and chronicles.
Then Skaryna published 23 books of the Old Testament under the common name Biblia Ruska (the Russian Bible) but in separate editions (each with its title page and page numbering). In 1517, Skaryna issued 4 books, in 1518 he published twice more, in 1519 - already 11 ones.
