13 lip 2024 · The history of Los Angeles began in 1781 when 44 settlers from New Spain established a permanent settlement in what is now Downtown Los Angeles, as instructed by Spanish Governor of Las Californias, Felipe de Neve, and authorized by Viceroy Antonio María de Bucareli.
Los Angeles grew around a Spanish religious settlement called a mission. Settlers founded the town in 1781. It was ruled by Spain and later Mexico. In 1846, during the Mexican-American War, U.S. forces captured Los Angeles. Los Angeles grew very rapidly. Its population went from about 11,000 in 1880 to more than 1 million in 1930.
