22 lut 1994 · On February 22, 1994, the National Academy of Engineers awarded Backus the third Draper Award "for the development of Fortran--FORmula TRANslation--the first general-purpose, high-level computer language, which ushered in the computer software revolution."
Until about 1970, programming languages and their compilers were perhaps the most active system software area. Because of its technical position at that time, IBM made significant contributions to this field.
