The Early History. The Cincinnati Public School District dates from its official start in 1829 as a district called The Common Schools of Cincinnati. The City of Cincinnati was founded in 1788 on the Ohio River bank opposite the mouth of the Licking River.

Cincinnati Colored Public Schools. The city of Cincinnati, following Ohio law, set aside the education taxes on African American held properties for “Colored Public Schools” beginning in the 1850’s. Black men elected the school board, the only election in which they could vote.
