The city of Cincinnati, following Ohio law, set aside the education taxes on African American held properties for “Colored Public Schools” beginning in the 1850’s. Black men elected the school board, the only election in which they could vote.

Cincinnati Public Schools built a handsome new Frederick Douglass School in 1911. The school served as a center for the African American community in Walnut Hills. It continued to attract students from other neighborhoods.
