The rebirth of knowledge, and humankind’s interest in its own place in the world, marked by the Renaissance, set the stage for the application much of what had been learned since about 1300.
Europeans who traveled to the Americas spread throughout Europe. By the end of the eighteenth century, after hundreds of thousands of Europeans had moved to colonies in the Western Hemisphere, no less an authority than Adam Smith pronounced the "discovery" of America a turning point in world history.
